CAROLE LEARNED-MILLER, EdLD

Founding superintendent Dr. Carole Learned-Miller brings 25 years of experience as a teacher, principal and central office leader. Carole has a track record of developing innovative, highly engaging schools and classrooms where students achieve at high levels. She has also spent the last 6 years helping to lead an educational non-profit that develops highly effective principals and superintendents who know how to bring about great teaching and equity in their schools.

JEN SMITH

Principal/Teacher Jen Smith brings twenty years of experience as a teacher, reading specialist, and school leader. Jen loves the outdoors and has a deep passion for the teaching of reading. She received a master in education in reading from Columbia University and received her school leadership training from University of Pennsylvania. Jen is committed to creating a community where students of all backgrounds and identities can joyfully reach their full potential and contribute to a better world.

JESS MARSHALL

Administrative assistant Jess Marshall is a committed Warwick parent and community member who has worked tirelessly as a school committee member and volunteer to bring about the new school district. Jess also has decades of experience serving the community as a physical therapist.

CARLENE MURRAY, Kinder - 1st Grade

Carlene is a teacher and mother of three with a trauma informed, nurturing and child centered approach towards learning. Carlene grew up in and around Gardner, Massachusetts. She learned her first lessons in plant and animal identification and respect for nature while hiking through the forests and gardening with her father. She completed her B.S. degree in Environmental Science from Muhlenberg College in PA and is currently finishing her M.Ed. at Antioch University in Keene, NH.


She completed her credential as a master teacher and site supervisor for preschool children in 2004 and founded a full day nature preschool program from 2010-2015. Attending the forest kindergarten teacher training and certification intensive at CedarSong nature school in 2018 on Vashon Island, WA was an amazingly inspiring experience. She was able to use this knowledge to design a curriculum for a nature based Kindergarten program that encouraged the growth of character through respect for other humans and the natural world.


Carlene also has experience connecting children to their community through organizing field trips, volunteering with the Audubon society, and running an outdoor camp program. Carlene is so glad to be teaching students at WCS and working together to build community and develop a deep connections to the earth and each other.

NETTIE HARRINGTON PANGALLO, 3rd Grade

Nettie is the second and third grade teacher at Warwick Community School. She brings just under two decades of teaching experience, rooted in the Reggio philosophy of education wherein teachers collaborate with children as co-facilitators of emergent, project-based, and child-driven curricula. Nettie brings her passion for music, reading, nature, and anti-bias, culturally responsive-sustaining education into the classroom each day.


Throughout her teaching, Nettie grounds all learning experiences in a shared foundational understanding of the inherent power and expertise of every learner--both child and adult--from those within our school community to those living far beyond it, in our world community. Nettie received her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley University and her Ed.S. in Social Justice Education from UMass Amherst.

KELLY LOUD, 4th - 6th Grade

Kelly Loud is the new 4 through 6 grade teacher at Warwick Community School. This will be her second year of teaching. She has 5 years working in the academic field and continues to develop her teaching strategies over the years.


Mrs. Loud has a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Baypath University, which held a primary focus and interest in child development. She also has a post Master's certificate in Mindfulness from Lesley University, which provided her with the knowledge of brain function in relation to mindfulness in early and elementary academia. Mrs. Loud also holds a Masters in Elementary Education 1 through 6 from Cambridge College.


During her time outside the classroom, she enjoys hanging out with her dogs, antique and flea market shopping, doing outdoor activities, and visiting family. Mrs. Loud is excited to be a part of the WCS family and looks forward to this and future school years.

STEPHANIE CROSS, Special Education

Stephanie Cross is the Special Education teacher for Warwick Community School. Stephanie has been working in education since 2015 and this will be her 5th year teaching Special Education. When she is not teaching, she enjoys playing piano, working and hiking outdoors, sewing, knitting, and spending time with her family.


Stephanie is excited to be a part of a school that is looking to support all learners in the most inclusive setting possible. She is especially excited to foster project-based learning with an abundance of beautiful nature just outside the classroom. Stephanie looks forward to working with the teachers, parents and guardians, and students of Warwick!

ALLISON POLLITT,

Music Education

Allison holds a Bachelor of Music with a vocal concentration from Southern Methodist University and an MME from the University of North Texas where she also earned Kodály Certification through the Kodály Music Institute of Texas. Mrs. Pollitt taught general music and chorus PK-8 over the course of 10 years in Nueva Imperial, Chile, Texas, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Mrs. Pollitt also has enjoyed teaching homeschool general music, singing in community chorus, some composing of choral music, and is a member of the Organization of American Kodály Educators. In addition to teaching part-time at Warwick Community School, Allison is an adjunct professor of Southeastern University, assessing music theory assignments; and she also continues working with homeschoolers, teaching music theory, choir, and tutoring ninth grade in an international Christian classical community program, Classical Conversations. This year she returns to the public-school classroom, excited to return to her first love, teaching general music.

EMILY STEWART, Open Arts

Emily Stewart is excited to join this year’s adventure at the Warwick Community School! She designs her classrooms as places where students have a voice and artistic agency to discover and express their own ideas. She firmly believes that the most important product out of the art room is not frame-ready artwork, but the child’s own capabilities and beliefs about oneself.


Emily started her teaching career splitting her week between university students and preschool students. She finally found her sweet spot in elementary art, and currently also teaches at Erving Elementary and Pelham Elementary Schools.


When she’s not in the classroom, she can be found in her fiber studio, creating memory maps of places she’s called home. She loves to read, hike, and skate on frozen ponds with her husband and two kids, ages 9 and 13.

JOHANNA WELLS,

Physical Education

Johanna Wells has been a PE teacher for 17+ years. Coach Jo taught at an all boys inner city charter school in NY and an international school in Ecuador. She currently also teaches part-time at a small community school in Vermont. Coach Jo's interests in sports and physical activity combined with an interest in working with children led her to this career. She enjoys the opportunity to expose her students to a wide variety of activities and skills that develop a deeper interest in becoming physically active individuals. Witnessing her students engaged in learning, as they develop and experience success drives her to be the best PE teacher that she can be. The PE setting also provides opportunities to encourage students in their social skills and interactions with peers or those around them. She looks forward to incorporating and exploring our beautiful natural surrounding in Warwick! Coach Jo was born and lived her early days in Puerto Rico. This provided a platform for her to learn Spanish young and instilled in her a respect and value for understanding and embracing other cultures. More recently, her family drew her to make Warwick home and she is so pleased she has. Outside of teaching, her interests include spending time with her family, traveling, kayaking and hiking with her dog, and more.


BRANTLEY POWERS,

Occupational Therapy

Mrs. Powers has been a pediatric occupational therapist going on 40 years. She has worked as a rehabilitation manager, an early intervention director and as a school therapist in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts. She thrives on creating inclusive environments where all students can flourish and succeed, and she is very knowledgeable regarding best practices in the field of occupational therapy. Mrs. Powers is passionate about the outdoors, and when not in school, she is most likely at her camp in Maine, enjoying watersports and making s'mores around the campfire.

STAFF DIRECTORY - CONSULTANTS

SARAH NOVOGRODSKY

Our Librarian Consultant to assist with the modernizing of our beautiful school library. Sarah is working with the consultant teachers as well as our library committee, which currently includes Carole, Jess Marshall and Brian Snell, to ensure our library has a multicultural collection and recent, award-winning works of fiction for all K-6 readers. In addition, Sarah is ensuring our collection will support the classroom curriculum with many non-fiction pieces of literature, with a focus on nature and the environment. Sarah has worked as a library media specialist in the Cambridge Public Schools since 2001. She has a masters degree in education from Lesley and a masters in library science from Simmons College.

CAROL S. HOLZBERG, PhD, CETL

An educational technologist and tech integrationist who is passionate about student-centered digital solutions for teaching and learning. Carol worked as Technology Director in the Greenfield Public Schools (Greenfield, MA) for 17 years until retiring, but has returned to education as a technology consultant. For many years, she also taught "Introduction to Educational Technology" in the Licensure Program at the Collaborative for Educational Services (Northampton, MA) and worked in the School of Education at Capella University, teaching online courses and mentoring graduate students seeking careers in educational technology.

We are seeking elementary school teachers who are committed to place and project based learning both in and about nature. Our district is one of the newest public school districts nestled on a woodland campus with many geographic wonders on and around the campus. Educators who are committed to teaching in multi-age classrooms, using standards-aligned, evidence based, engaging curricula for deeper learning, and who are excited to teach both culturally responsive and personalized curriculum are encouraged to apply.


Teachers who are licensed Prek-2 and K-6 are welcome to apply as well as special education, art, music and physical education licenses. Please also contact us if you are seeking a leadership role.
